Steal This Look: A Belgian-Inflected Guest Bedroom, 100 Square Feet Small
The owner of a remodeled house in Washington, DC, has an unshakable obsession with European design (we can relate) and is willing to source far and wide to get it. So far that she enlisted designers Studio Oink from Leipzig, Germany, and had a load of EU products rounded up and shipped by crate. The tiny guest bedroom (under 100 square feet) features a curtained-off daybed, a custom desk, and a wall of storage. As with the rest of the house, Studio Oink worked with a Flemish color palette and integrated high European design. The result is a little piece of Belgium (or Germany, or Italy, or Sweden for that matter) in DC. Here’s a list of design sources that make up the look.
Above: Parked at the custom desk is a steel chair from Belgian husband-and-wife team Hannes Van Severen and Fien Muller. The owner and designers both welcomed the investment of design-as-art, the chair being one of them. The curtains throughout the bedroom are Kinnasand Como (a discontinued linen fabric with a metallic weave), that run on a track. Above: The L-shaped setup is half millwork (a custom desk with storage) and half off-the-shelf (an untreated wood bed frame) that appear as if one piece, thanks to the same paint color and finish. Paint
Above: The door and hallway are painted with pinkish [product id="616407"]Setting Plaster[/product] by Farrow & Ball.
Above: The walls are painted with [product id="620377"]Satin Slipper[/product] from Farrow & Ball, who describe the color as “a chalky off-white.”
Above: To give the small room dimension, Studio Oink had the ceiling painted with a lighter, near-white color, [product id="609773"]Wevet[/product] from Farrow & Ball, to contrast with the Satin Slipper color of the walls.
Above: The wood floors are builder-grade white oak painted [product id="621966"]Elephant’s Breath[/product] from Farrow & Ball.
Furniture
Above: The guest bed is sadly no longer made: It’s the Thompson Trundle Bed from Urban Green Furniture that has been fashioned as a storage daybed (see our post 10 Design Ideas to Steal from an Über Creative Remodel by Studio Oink for what’s stored underneath). The trundle bed was painted Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin to match the walls. For something similar, try the Bridgeman Natural Oak Wood Kids Storage Trundle Bed from Crate & Barrel.
Above: At the desk is the [product id="1010538"]Muller van Severen First Chair[/product] made of lacquered steel and polyethylene; $1,500 at Matter.
Lighting
Above: On the built-in desk is the Artemide Nesso Table in white; $490 at DWR.
Above: The pendant light is the small white Aballs Pendant Lamp by Jaime Hayon and Parachilna; $1,487.50 from Lumens.
Above: The switch-plate covers are from US-based company Legrand: The [product id="998667"]Adorne Custom Wall Plate, 3-Gang, White Trim[/product] can be painted to match the color of the wall.
Fabric & Linens
Above: The pink throw pillows are [product id="1010569"]By Mölle Pink Salt[/product] Linen Cushions; €59 each with the insert at By Mölle.
Above: The blue throw pillow is another from By Mölle, the [product id="1010560"]Cloudy Blue Linen Cushion[/product]; €59 with the insert at By Mölle.
Above: The lightest of the throw pillows is the [product id="1010555"]By Mölle Misty Grey Linen Cushion[/product]; €59 with the insert at By Mölle.
Above: The throw blanket is the Miramar Wool Blanket in dark gray lamb’s wool from Urbanara; it’s no longer available, but Evangeline’s 100 Percent Cashmere Throw in Granite is a good lookalike.
Above: For similar sheets, the Stonewashed Linen Sheet Set in Charcoal is currently on sale for $279 from The Citizenry.
Accessories
Above: Michaël Verheyden’s Petite Vase is made of solid white marble in Belgium; available from Kneen & Co.
Above: A hand-dipped Swedish Branch Candle is available for $25 via Abelcarver on Etsy.
