Quick Takes With: Tan France

by Remodelista Team

For anyone who’s seen the Emmy-award winning reboot of Queer Eye, Tan France needs no introduction. As the show’s fashion expert, his talent is for seeing a person’s individuality and coaxing out their own personal style and confidence. (And he’s revolutionized the art of looking effortless with the French tuck. Try it; it’s a game changer.) Tan is a New York Times-bestselling author, a producer of plays and documentaries focused on amplifying diverse voices, and an arbiter of style in the fashion world—and now he’s continuing his foray into interiors and design with his debut home collection, just out from Castlery.

Tan’s approach to interiors? It’s much the same as his fashion ethos, he says: As a British-Pakistani raised in the UK, his approach is rooted in “the richness of multiple identities” and the idea that home should reflect who you are.

Today, Tan writes in with the kitchen splurge he can’t get enough of, his go-to sheets, and the accessory he’s always got on. Read on:

What’s on your bedside table?

Book, candle, lamp, charger.

What podcast or playlist do you put on when you need inspiration?

The Dish. It’s a UK podcast about food, and I love taking food inspo from there.

What’s a film or TV show whose aesthetic has stuck with you?

Halston. It was a Netflix show that aired a few years back and I’m still crazy about the aesthetic.

You’re invited to dinner. What’s your go-to gift?

An easy housewarming present would be my Anika Table Lamp. It works in any space for a pop of joy.

What has been your best house upgrade?

My range. L’Atelier Paris. I’m OBSESSED with it!

What’s a simple or budget-friendly design move you wish you’d known sooner?

For a room refresh, just change out throw pillows to really freshen the place up.

My favorite sheets are…

Cozy Earth. The best I’ve ever slept on.

Your design pet peeve?

Chrome light fixtures. I know so many people love that finish, but personally, most of the time it looks too builder-grade. However, I have seen a few cases where it’s done in a really chic way.

My go-to kitchen utensil is…

Silicone rigid spatula.

First design love?

Tudor homes. I dreamt of one day living in one, when I was a child.

What item from your closet do you have on repeat?

Stonewash Levis 501s. Forever and always.

Something you’re coveting?

The Jaron Recliner Sofa from Castlery. I need it for my cinema room.

I don’t leave the house without…

A great pair of shades.
